Maverick is an approx. 3 year old GSD with lots of energy and a great personality. He is very affectionate and people friendly. He gets along well with other dogs but can get a bit rambunctious due to his playfulness. He would do great in a home with either another GSD or a dog similar in size and energy level. No cats or small dogs please. Maverick was previously adopted into a home with a cat and that did not work out. The cat was constantly in hiding and Maverick thought this was all a great, big game of chase. Regarding small dogs: Maverick is about 80 pounds of silly so it would not be responsible to adopt him into a home where he could accidentally hurt a small dog. Children are okay as long as they are older. Again, Maverick has the capability of knocking down a small child, he also grabs his toys when playing and he does not always realize the hand is still attached. He is big, happy, goofy and manners are the last thing on his mind. Maverick loves to play with his toys (we try to get really tough ones as he is very hard on them) He will fetch them and loves to be pulled around by them (watch your hands though) Maverick is very strong and needs a firm hand when leash walking. (still working on leash manners) Maverick knows some basic commands but that is about as far as it goes. He is very smart and learns quickly but he will definitely need obedience training. We are looking for an active home with GSD experience and strong leadership. Maverick is house trained as well as crate trained. Secured fenced yard required!!!! Maverick is utd on vaccinations, dewormed, treated with Frontline, on Heartworm prevention and neutered. Please contact us for more info or to fill out our adoption application. German Shepherds require a serious commitment. Many of the dogs that come to rescue organizations have no training. It is important that the new family puts time and effort into training their rescue dog. These dogs have a high energy level. The very energy that allows these dogs to be police, search, guide and herding dogs is often the reason these dogs are surrendered. If youre looking for a couch potato you may want to consider a different breed. German Shepherds are highly intelligent. If they are not given a job to do they will often come up with their own. Like any dog, the German Shepherd is a social animal and needs to be part of a family. The loyalty that endears this breed to many requires that it not be banished to the backyard. German Shepherds are large dogs. The number one reason given by people surrendering German Shepherds is moving. Usually apartments do not welcome these dogs. If you dont know where you will be a few years down the line it is not the right time to adopt.
